Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffen dropped a game last night on the the road, and today it seems he will be removed as head coach. Last week, Al Davis hinted that Kiffen could be fired any day now, and after a 1-2 start it appears that day is now.
A coaching change would be mean the Raiders would have their fifth coach since making the Super Bowl in 2002. More importantly, the Raiders will continue to flounder at the bottom of the League. Instability will destroy any football team, and the Raiders are the poster child of instability and inconsistency.
Another question that comes to mind is can anyone return the Raiders to greatness? The answer is no. Not at long as Al Davis is alive. Al Davis owns the Raiders, and Al likes things done his way. He picks the players, he picks the coaches, he makes all the decisions. If a coach cannot pick the people he wants around them, then they cannot set up their schemes and their game plans. Al Davis makes Jerry Jones look like a hands off owner.
In the end, the Raiders will continue to struggle as their search to find an identity that extend beyond Al Davis's shadow. It is unsure who will called upon to replace Lane Kiffen, but one can rest assured whoever gets the job will struggle under the pressure of being an Oakland Raider.
