The College bowl season kicked off this past weekend, and we were treated to four great games on Saturday. While many of these early bowl games may not feature many teams we are familiar with watching, there can make for some interesting matchups on the field.Saturday’s games brought some drama, and they also may have given us some clues on how the rest of the bowl season will play out.
WakeForest 29 vs. Navy 19: This was the first annual Eagle Bank Bowl, and it also marked the return of football to RFK stadium in WashingtonD.C.This actually turned out to be a pretty good game.Navy fought hard for the entire game, but as is the case for this team, they were unable to keep up with a larger and faster division I team for the entire game.WakeForest was able to put up 15 points in the fourth quarter and eventually pulled away with the victory.WakeForest walked away with the victory and they covered the three point spread.
ColoradoState 40 vs. FresnoState 35: This game marked the rematch of one time conference foes. The key to this game was the ColoradoState offense, mainly their rushing attack. The Rams were able to have their way at the line of scrimmage and as a result they were constantly able to get yards and key first downs when they needed them.FresnoState once again proved unable to get off the field and give their defense any type of rest.FresnoState was a three point favorite, but the Colorado State Rams came in and asserted their authority, picking up the win, and giving the nudge to their old Western Athletic Conference foe.
South Florida 41 vs. Memphis 14: This was the game that I was flat out wrong about and I completely misread the tea leaves on Friday evening.South Florida had not impressed me all season.Every time they needed to come up with a big win during their Big East schedule, the Bulls fell short.Going into Saturday’s game, the pride of the entire University of SouthFlorida’s football program was on the line.Memphis let everyone know they were excited at the opportunity to knock off a team from a BCS conference.Instead, Memphis proved why their program still has a way to go before they can leave Conference USA.Outside of the opening minutes of this game, South Florida dominated in every aspect of the game. The Bulls used their superior athleticism to impose their will. The spread favored South Florida by 11 points, and they covered that easily.
BYU 31 vs. Arizona 21: This was the late game on Saturday evening, and it was supposed to be the best game of the day. In many ways it lived up to the hype. However, the scoring in this game was actually lower than what I anticipated. So prediction of taking the over fell a little short.Nonetheless, this was an impressive win for the Arizona Wildcats who got the chance to show the world that their football program has arrived, and they will be looking to contend in the Pac 10 very shortly. The spread favored Arizona by three points, and they were able to live up to the hype.
